How To Choose an Animation Format

Use this guide to choose between FBX, BVH, VRMA, and VMD based on source data, target workflow, and browser-side validation needs.

Animation format choice is usually a workflow decision, not an abstract file-format preference. The right answer depends on what the motion is today and where it needs to go next.

Start with the target workflow

The most reliable first question is where the motion needs to end up. Avatar-oriented destinations usually push the workflow toward VRMA, MMD destinations point toward VMD, and generic exchange tasks often stay between FBX and BVH.

Choosing the target first makes the route page much easier to identify.

Then look at the source constraints

A source in FBX, BVH, VRMA, or VMD does not force the final answer, but it does shape the likely route. The key is to decide whether the source is already close to the target ecosystem or still needs a more deliberate handoff.

That is where a structured route matrix becomes useful.

Why browser validation still matters

Even before the implementation layer is complete, browser-side route pages, viewers, and guides reduce ambiguity. They tell teams what the next validation step should be and what the current milestone does or does not promise.

That clarity is valuable on its own and makes later implementation work easier to stage.
